How I use a DTC reader to restore power brakes in my Gen 2 Prius.

Use a DTC code reader to restore power brakes on Gen 2 PriusMy Gen 2 Prius has an internal pressure leak in the ABS VSC system. It’s not a red triangle incident quite. When the booster pressure falls low enough three lights come on. The Brake Warning light, the ABS light and the VSC light. For bigger problems you will get an alarm buzzer ringing.

In my case there is no change in braking at this warning stage. Then it can, after as many as 15 miles drive time or much longer if ever this next thing happens. The alarm comes on and you lose power brakes. That first time you apply them the pedal may feel very squishy and weak braking. You basically have been reduced to manual brakes instead of power brakes.

You have to be sure to not panic. Drive cautiously and give cars 4 car spaces between them and you. Then pull your ass over and try this fix.
To do this you’ll need a standard DTC code reader. Like this one,

How To Restore Power Brakes in a Prius Gen II

This is what you can do when your power brakes soft fail, leaving you with manual brakes. Also how to turn off the ABS VSC lights and silence the alarm.

Procedure:

Park Prius on level ground. Leave space in front in case you must tow it. Turn the car off and remove the key. Wait for any sounds to cease.
Plug the key back in, press the brakes and press START. You will see the VSC ABS lights come on and hear the Prius ABS VSC Failure Alarm. Sometimes it stops on its own so wait on it for 45 seconds or so.
Now plug in the DTC code reader into the data port under the dashboard. The DTC code reader will read the engine codes first as it wakes up. You don’t have an engine problem, so this information doesn’t matter right now.
Press the lower left key, (or wherever the button is) for reading brake system codes.
In this video the DTC brake codes that displayed were code C1252 and C1256. Erase code C1256
It will erase then read the codes and should return a no code result.
Now the ABS VSC lights on the dash will go out and the alarm will stop.

Repeat as needed while you save up for an ABS system replacement job costing $4000 at a Toyota dealership. Prius 2 repair hack.

Pay at the pump after wiping keypad with sanitary wipe. Eat drive through food. Drink ionized water. Park in full sunlight. Sunlight sterilizes surfaces and skin. State rest areas are cleaner than truck stop or restaurant bathrooms. Still, wipe before you sit and don’t pee on the seat. Wash the sink handles every time you use a sink. Use ultraviolet light to disinfect items like money, phones, masks and what have you. Stay out of crowds. Take the road less traveled. Greet non-verbally by bumping elbows. Don’t pass pipes and joints, everybody smoke on their own devices.

Shop with protective gear on and grab a store wipe cloth coming in when available. Mouth covering is for preventing some potential spread of infection. Respirators or mask and eye protection are for preventing getting infected. Protect your eyes with swimming goggles. Helps keep fingers out of eyes. Don’t wear a mask driving alone in your car. It just funks up the mask for no benefit. Make gas stations keep receipt paper from running out so you can pay at the pump. Wash your hands after touching anything others also touch. Have them put your change in a plastic zip lock bag for later sterilization before it’s put in your wallet.

Cough into your arm, not your hand, not a handkerchief. Paper towels are better than toilet paper or kleenex tissues for high volume expectoration. Constantly run fluids through your body, sipping every 5-10 minutes.

The engine started losing power and when I took it to CarX they discovered that the catalytic converter had been 90% clogged with some kind of cleaning spray residue and gunk. The old one looked like it had been filled with orange paint. Basically, the engine couldn’t exhale. After the catalytic converter was replaced the engine roared back to life and has served very well in all driving conditions.

I must admit, I was skeptical about buying a Buick in the first place. I prefer Oldsmobiles and will always remember how the Buick Skylark was their cheesy knock-off of the Olds Cutlass or Chevy Malibu. A weak attempt at the muscle car market of the 1970’s. Lots of Skylarks still survive, grill intact, because they came with front disc brakes. Cutlasses that came with front drum brakes are easy to spot by their front end collision damage. Also, skylark buyers may have been a less adventurous type?

This Buick LeSabre’s Story

So I had a strong bias against it. But when I took this baby on a road trip I found it to be not just very comfortable, but well featured. The stereo, and cruise control are available on the wheel and in easy to reach locations. The power seats work. the stereo is AM FM Tape with good speakers.

The air conditioning and heat are set on the dash by variable temp and vent controls. Still intuitive enough to use even with their lights partially burned out/ There are minor idiosyncrasies with the various features with the rear driver side window needs a new motor and the headliner is separated and sagging. I was 50/50 on whether I should do additional welding for frame support and replace the front calipers, which are rusty and failing.
